California has clear statewide stun gun laws โ but for college students, the campus policy is what actually matters. Most UC campuses ban stun guns outright, regardless of what state law says.
What California Law Actually Says
California Penal Code 22610 permits adults 18 and older to purchase, possess, and carry stun guns and Tasers for lawful self-defense without a permit. The key restrictions:
- Age: 18+ to purchase or possess (16-17 with written parental consent)
- Prohibited persons: Convicted felons, drug addicts, those with prior assault or stun gun misuse convictions
- Prohibited locations: School grounds, government buildings, public meetings, airports
There is no permit requirement and no size or voltage restriction under California state law.
The Campus Reality
State law is only half the story. UCLA Policy 131 explicitly states that no person shall bring or possess a stun gun on university property or at off-campus university activities. UC Berkeley enforces the same ban โ a 2019 incident near Sather Gate resulted in a UCPD response specifically because stun gun possession on campus is prohibited by law.
The entire UC system follows this approach. For California college students, a stun gun is effectively off the table as a campus carry option.
What to Carry Instead
The two tools that work on every California campus:
Personal alarm โ The She's Birdie ($29.99) and SABRE Personal Alarm ($12) are legal everywhere in California, unrestricted on every UC and CSU campus, and require no training or age minimum. A 130dB alarm is effective, legal, and impossible to have confiscated at move-in.
Pepper spray โ Legal under state law for adults 18+ with a 2.5 oz size limit. Permitted in outdoor areas on many California campuses. The SABRE Campus Safety Pepper Gel ($11.99) is within California's size limit and gives you distance from an attacker that a stun gun never could.
Always verify your specific campus policy with the Dean of Students or campus police before carrying any self-defense tool in dorms or campus buildings.

Important: Campus policies change. Always verify current pepper spray rules directly with your student's campus police department or housing office before move-in day. State law sets the minimum โ individual colleges can be more restrictive.
